Seven reasonsI visited several publishing house sites, not because I had a manuscript to send – I've actually already sent one to a couple of publishers – but to get a feel for the publishing house. A site, after all, represents the online business card of every commercial reality, therefore also editorial. I could surprise you by starting with the classic phrase "I've seen things that you humans...", but perhaps it's better to be serious and get straight to the point. Why choose a publisher? There can be many reasons, but I'm not interested in this article. Here, now, I want to tell you why not choose a publisher . Website : as I have already said, a website is your business card, your image on the web.
A publishing house that does not take care of its site, but presents one that is artisanal, crude, or even on free spaces, does not think highly of itself. He won't even be able to have it for my book. Italian mistakes : unfortunately I'm not joking. On many publisher sites I found punctuation and grammatical errors. Errors that are in themselves inconceivable on a Special Data company website are even more shameful on that of a publisher. Assumption : yes, I once stumbled upon the website of a publisher who - as a complete stranger - pretended to be number one in the publishing world. I'm not saying that a publishing house should belittle itself, but neither should it present itself as the giant that it is not. What bothered me was the tone used in the lyrics.
Book Covers : The cover is the first thing you see about a book. If the editorial format of a work is of poor quality, it will not attract the reader's eye, rather it will make him turn away. For my book – and I'm not being arrogant here – I want a professional cover. Proofreading and Editing : I already wrote an article about this. Every aspiring writer, before sending a manuscript, should read the publisher's books and observe how he works. One eye on editing and one on proofreading . In a book of over 400 pages I found almost 1 or 2 typographical errors per page. A little too much for my taste. Sending paper manuscripts : in the age of the web it seems ridiculous to me to request paper manuscripts sent by traditional mail. An author will spend a lot, a publisher will find himself overwhelmed by paper. My manuscripts will travel exclusively via email. Excessive predisposition : towards publication, I mean. I've seen sites where publishers claimed they would respond to all authors.
